Driving Sustainable Aquaculture for South Australia's Future

We envisage a future defined by the continued growth and strategic expansion of sustainable aquatic industries across South Australia, with the Eyre Peninsula playing a pivotal role. With its natural advantages and established expertise, the region is well-placed to become a national leader in both land and sea-based marine aquaculture.
We see South Australia at the forefront of innovation in aquaculture, underpinned by scientific research, industry collaboration, and forward-thinking regulation. With the right policy support and investment, the state has the potential to deliver long-term economic, environmental, and regional development outcomes through a thriving aquaculture sector.

Our vision is to contribute to the responsible development of this industry — one that creates jobs, supports local communities, strengthens food security, and safeguards our marine and freshwater environments. By working in partnership with government, industry and research institutions, we aim to help shape a sustainable aquaculture future that benefits all South Australians.

Our Aquaculture Facility & Shellfish Hatchery in South Australia

We are a multi-species aquaculture company that operate primarily at our land-based site The Centre For Aquaculture, Louth Bay. The location is one of the most suitable sites for aquaculture in South Australia; located 20 kilometres from the seafood capital of Australia, Port Lincoln.
Our primary business is ‘Sea Ready Shellfish’ which operates as a shellfish hatchery, currently producing Pacific oyster and flat oyster seed for growers across the State. Our oyster hatchery and nursery operations are entirely focused on providing hardened ‘sea ready’ spat to oyster growers.

Sea Ready Shellfish

Our primary business, Sea Ready Shellfish, operates as a dedicated shellfish hatchery and nursery, currently producing high-quality spat for growers of both Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and native flat oysters (Ostrea angasi). We supply grower-out operations across South Australia with robust, well-conditioned ‘sea ready’ seed that is primed for successful transfer into open-water farming environments. Our operations are entirely focused on providing resilient juvenile oysters that meet the specific demands of commercial aquaculture.

Hatchery

Our hatchery is the foundation of the Sea Ready Shellfish operation. Here, we manage the complete early lifecycle of oysters through broodstock conditioning, spawning induction, larval rearing, and early settlement. We operate under strict protocols to ensure genetic integrity and disease control, while maintaining high standards of water quality, nutrition, and temperature regulation throughout all stages of larval development.

Nursery

Once oysters have settled and begun shell formation, they are transferred to our land-based nursery systems, where they are grown out to a hardened ‘sea ready’ stage. During this critical transitional phase, we gradually expose spat to conditions that simulate the marine environment — including natural temperature fluctuations, variable salinity, and increased water flow — to build resilience prior to deployment on farms.

Sustainable Aquatic Industries

Through our company, Sustainable Aquatic Industries, we intend to utilise the resources of the site, which includes a 4,000m² shed; along with infrastructure in place to deliver and return up to 500 litres per second of seawater at low head.
We are licensed to produce a number of marine species including scallops, sea urchins, cockles (clams), abalone and razorfish. Our company has a particular interest in Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture; a methodology whereby the output (e.g. nutrients) of one marine species becomes a resource for another.  As well as aquaculture products, we see the opportunity to include re-seeding, conservation (e.g. breeding of vulnerable marine species) and tourism as part of a broader, integrated aquaculture industry.

The Future of Sustainable Aquaculture

Looking ahead, we are committed to diversifying our operations by exploring and developing additional aquaculture species with strong commercial and environmental potential, particularly focusing on shellfish and marine grazers. Our approach is grounded in realistic, science-based assessment to ensure the viability and sustainability of any new ventures.

We recognise that the future growth and success of South Australia’s aquaculture sector depends on collaboration. We aim to actively partner with like-minded individuals, organisations, and research institutions who share our passion for responsible aquaculture development. Through innovation, shared knowledge, and concerted effort, we aspire to contribute to a resilient and prosperous aquaculture industry that benefits regional communities and safeguards marine ecosystems.

By building on our existing strengths and embracing new opportunities, we envision a vibrant future where South Australia remains at the forefront of sustainable aquaculture, driving economic growth while respecting the environment.
